Potential Disadvantages

Cost is one of the most frequently cited potential disadvantages of a dedicated hosting plan. It is important to do the proper cost calculation when considering your options for web hosting services. Having a dedicated server is usually not cheap. This is understandable, since some of these plans include extensive services that make web hosting very convenient, with a lot of effort by the web hosting company to provide the best customer service.

Still, dedicated hosting is not for everyone. The extensive services that dedicated web hosting providers offer may be necessary and worth the cost for some businesses, but for others it might be a costly and unnecessary luxury. If you don’t want to take full responsibility for your server’s day-to-day maintenance, but find fully-managed dedicated servers to be too expensive for your budget, you may want to consider a shared hosting plan, where the maintenance of the server is the responsibility of the web hosting provider, and the cost of maintenance is split between multiple clients, given that they share the same server. The drawback to shared hosting, on the other hand, is that you don’t have nearly as much control over the choice of hardware and software, and even less say in server management than with a fully-managed dedicated server.

Dedicated server providers may also prohibit adult content because of potential legal liability issues, and may disallow IRC because of its vulnerability against DDoS (distributed denial-of-service) attacks, but these are small costs to pay for the provider-guaranteed security of your dedicated server.
